In the action role-playing game (ARPG) Nier: Automata, players control battle androids from the YoRHa units in an expansive open environment. In addition to using a unique item to navigate normally on foot, the player can also summon a wild animal to ride and, in rare circumstances, control a flying mech to engage in combat. Similar to Nier (2010), the camera occasionally switches from its usual third-person perspective to an overhead or side-scrolling view when navigating certain locales. The player must hop between platforms or over obstacles in order to move through some areas, which also incorporate platforming components.
Side missions for non-playable characters (NPCs) are available for the player to complete. The player can buy goods from stores located in hub areas, including consumables that restore health. There are 26 distinct endings in Automata, including five major ones (A to E) and 21 additional ones (F to Z). These alternate endings serve as game-over situations brought on by completing particular tasks, failing to advance the plot, or losing specific battles.
