In Mortal Kombat II (1993), the younger Sub-Zero is introduced. Upon his brother’s death in the first tournament and Shang Tsung’s survival, Sub-Zero is sent by the Lin Kuei to complete his brother’s unfinished task, but is thwarted by Scorpion, who mistakes him for his brother until he witnesses him spare an opponent’s life; something the original Sub-Zero was not known to do. Scorpion eventually discovers the new Sub-Zero’s true identity and, in return for taking his brother’s life, vows to protect him forever.
